Free time as a possibility to grow

A warm welcome to my lovely reader (s).

Considering this being my first real entry, I was thinking about what I could write to start this blog on an authentic and positive note. In this thought process I have come to realize that it doesn´t really matter what I write but rather - that I write. And that simple but interesting thought leads us to our today´s topic; just doing.

One could think of this as a catchy NIKE slogan, but there is really more to it if you really think about the sentence  "just do it".

Starting new activities, no matter where the road takes you, can be more challenging than you would expect. Most times I lack the motivation or discipline to end projects that I have started just because I am worried that the end result will not fully reach my expectations. Often I don´t even see the potential my spare time offers for me to grow as a person.

This last year I have had a lot of free time. At first that sounds nice and relieving, but the fact is that I have had no clue what to do with myself. While in school or at your job you long for free time, but when that unwritten time span comes around you suddenly don´t know what to do other than maybe lie in bed looking at the screen of your mobile phone.

No one can tell you how you should spend your free time but I encourage you to think about how you want to spend it. For me, I have come to realize that I want to spend it more wisely. There is no such thing as wasting time but once I put my phone down options can come to mind that I had not anticipated there to be.

And to be clear, the phone isn´t this evil object. Maybe you are reading this on your phone... I wouldn´t call that a harmful activity, but as always in life: Balance is key. May it be your diet or your sleep schedule, balance is what keeps it intact.

My free time sometimes feels like this weird time span in which I am waiting for the next obligatory task to come around e.g. doing homework or cooking dinner. I believe it should  rather open up the endless things one can do to grow as an individual and challenge your mind and body in a fully voluntary and enjoyable way. Because this is not about obliging yourself to do something just because you should (e.g. do sports). This is about realizing that you are the van Gogh of this blank canvas, which is your time... on this earth, really.

A quite inspirational sentence that comes to mind is "don´t wait for motivation - start, and  you will be motivated" and that´s it. If you are told to draw a house, you could be inspired to draw a whole village.

A conversation with a loved one, going for a walk as well as reading that book that´s been standing in your shelf can really open new doors and possibilities to enjoy life and find happiness in many ways.

Overall I want to encourage myself and the ones reading this to stay curious and open-minded to make the most out of your „boring“ time at home.

So why don´t you go ahead, look around for a minute and do something that you will be proud of at the end of the day.

I hope you enjoyed and see you soon!

There´s that thought.
